This years National carnival was held in Queensland on the Gold Coast with Vic Country fielding teams in every division.
Our 45s team played for a medal against Vic Metro but went down in a hard fought battle. All other teams were generally competitive but with players dropping back from older age groups, we were always against it, running out of legs in most cases.
There were some great individual performances with a number of players recognised with Vic Country Best & Fairest and All Australian honours.
35/40s Wayne Allan
45s Bernie Purcell & Justin Kammerer
50s Tim Delaney
55s Paddy Whelan
60s Ollie Mathews
As usual we had some great off field support with our trainers JK & Robbo. Also very big thanks to Natalie and Jarrod who took the lead in the team managing duties. Whilst there were others that jumped in and helped out, these two kept things in order.
Tommy Williams also performed a magnificent job handling the merchandise and apparel as well as general duties to keep us rolling along.
Graeme Boyd was busy organising a number of social events which included watching the AFL Grand Final together and the Cocktail night, both events well attended. It is always great when we have a venue to gather and mix socially away from the footy field.
In 2017 the National Carnival will be held in Geelong. This presents a great opportunity for Vic Country to field strong teams in every age group. We obviously need to be ready and start our preparations early.
This year we held training runs and announced coaches earlier in the year than we have previously done. I would like to see us do this again and have proposed a timeline in my recommendations.
